INTERVIEW: Tyson Fury's manager speaks out on boxer's shock retirement

Tyson Fury's manager has spoken to Beyond Radio about what the future may hold for 'The Gypsy King' after he announced his retirement from boxing.

Spencer Brown said he didn't know ahead of time that the former world heavyweight champion was going to quit the sport.

Fury announced his retirement via a social media post on Monday.

Mr Brown said it was "a very sad day for boxing".

"It was a bit of shock but you can't go on forever," he said.

"He's got a big family, he's got a lovely wife, he's earned a lot of money in boxing. He should be over the moon with what he's done for boxing.

"It's going to be a very very quiet boxing space without him."

Fury said on Monday: "Hi everybody, I'm going to make this short and sweet.

"I'd like to announce my retirement from boxing. It's been a blast. I've loved every single minute of it.

"And I'm going to end with this. Dick Turpin wore a mask.

"God bless everybody, see you on the other side. GET UP!"

Mr Brown said: "It's been such a privilege to work with him. I love the man to death. I'll ring him every day. I'll still remain his manager and we will just see what happens in the future.

"He might go into films. He might be a wrestler. Who knows what he's going to do? You never know with Tyson Fury.

"I said to him, 'thanks for letting me know!' He said, 'you'd have only talked me out of it'.

"He said he'd just been for a coffee (on Monday) morning, mulled it over, spoke to the family, and he's come to a decision, and why not?

"He can't spend the money he's got. Maybe he wants to take the next step in his life, you know?

"He's been a character since the start. He's a giant of a man. He's been involved in all sorts of controversy over his time. There's never a boring moment with Tyson. He says what he wants to say, when he wants to say it.

"What he's done for mental health, I've seen him save lives. He's an advocate for mental health.

"He's a boxing enigma and he'll be sorely missed. It's going to be boring without him."

The former WBC, lineal and unified heavyweight champion previously announced his retirement from boxing in 2022, after defeating Dillian Whyte at Wembley Stadium.

But Tyson, who has publicly spoken at length about his battles with mental health issues, returned to the ring later that year, saying he found life difficult without boxing.

When asked if that could happen again, Mr Brown said: "I think he's probably got over that.

"He's got older, more mature. The emergence of seven children and his wife, it's not just about 12 rounds of boxing, it's about the dieting, the training, the going away from home, the living on camp for two to three months at a time. He's missing his kids growing up. People don't realise the sacrifices he does have to make.

"He's probably thought about it and thought that's it, I'm done.

"We'll take on new challenges and new roles. What a great Bond villain he'd be! 6ft 9 and a fierce looking man.

"Who knows what he's going to do? We love him and we'll respect whatever he decides."
