Former Portsmouth goalkeeper becomes Morecambe’s first signing of transfer window

Goalkeeper Ryan Schofield has joined Morecambe on a short term deal until the end of the season.

Born in Huddersfield, the 25-year-old progressed through the Terriers’ ranks before making his first team debut in 2019.

During his time at the John Smith’s Stadium, Schofield benefitted from six different loan spells with the likes of FC United of Manchester, AFC Telford, Notts County, Livingston, Hibs and Crawley Town.

After 15 years at his boyhood club, he left on a permanent move to Portsmouth in 2023 before arriving at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium as the club’s first signing of the transfer window.

The shot-stopper also represented England at youth level, earning a total of 10 caps across U18, U19 and U20 level.

After joining the Shrimps, Schofield spoke of his excitement, saying: “It’s a great feeling just to be back in and around it.

“I was in last week training a bit which was nice to see the set-up, the facilities and how the gaffer wants to work, and I think it’s something I can really get on board with, and I look forward to trying to help for the rest of the season.

“I knew Stu Moore before coming in, we trained together a few years ago so we’ve known each other and kept in touch. I know of Harry Burgoyne through a goalkeeper coach I had at Huddersfield and he had at Wolves.

“It’s a good group of goalkeepers and I think we can all push each other to make each other better and create a real learning environment.”

During his time with the Shrimps, he will wear the number 12 shirt.
