Vital Lancaster food bank at risk of closure receives funding boost to stay open

Almost £15,000 has been raised to enable a Lancaster food charity to remain open until at least the end of April.

Eggcup was facing closure at the beginning of January, but the local community has rallied around, donating thousands of pounds via an online GoFundMe campaign, and along with the support of various other local organisations, the charity now has enough resources to stay operational in the coming months.

Phil Tarney, manager of Eggcup, said: ‘’Thank you so much for your generous support over the past month. We have been blown away by everyone’s generosity and for the way the community has pulled together around us to help in a whole variety of ways.

‘’Eggcup staff, trustees and supporters have been working behind the scenes to secure additional funding to help us through this crisis period. As well as the money raised through the Crowdfunder we have secured financial support from West End Morecambe and the city council. Your donations to the Crowdfunder really helped demonstrate how valued Eggcup and the work we do is.

‘’Thanks to this we've taken the decision to close this crisis support Crowdfunder- thank you so much to everyone who donated.''

‘’Your donation along with the additional funding secured will enable us to operate until the end of April. This has provided us with breathing space to do more fundraising, review our operations and create an alternative business plan for the future.

‘’We have also had support in kind from local organisations such as Citizens Advice, CVS, Morecambe Food bank, Food Justice Partnership, FoodFutures, LESS, Blackpool Food bank, other food clubs and our two local MPs.

‘’The future is still uncertain and donations to this Crowdfunder will go directly to cover core operating costs to help us through this crisis period. This will enable us to continue operating and supporting households with access to food through throughout winter.

‘’Thank you again for your support.’’

Eggcup takes in food that would normally go to waste and distributes it to people in need.

The charity, which opened in 2020, has a centre on Chapel Street near Lancaster Bus Station, a shop on Albert Road in the West End of Morecambe, and opened a food club in Carnforth last year.

The charity has 126 volunteers, six staff and is helping more than 600 families across the district.
