Plans revealed to convert former Indian restaurant in Lancaster into flats

The former Indian restaurant on Parliament Street in Lancaster

Plans have been announced to convert a former Indian restaurant in Lancaster city centre into flats.

A listed building application has gone into Lancaster City Council for a change of use on the closed-down Kashish/The Balti House restaurant at 32 Parliament Street.

The application asks for permission to part demolish a single storey rear extension, create four one-bedroom flats, build a new single storey rear extension, install windows and doors, remove internal stairs, install new internal stairs and build internal walls.

The vacant restaurant is on two floors of the building, with flats above.

The building is Grade II listed, and in the 19th century was occupied by Anthony Bell and Sons, marble masons and sculptors.

The 18th century property is owned by Matt Wiggins and Dave Sumner. The restaurant closed in 2020.

A design and access statement submitted with the plans says: "Services to the building are already in situ. Access is existing from Parliament Street. There is good visibility in both directions along Parliament Street. Refuse collection is existing. Two parking paces are already available on the site.

"The site would be for private residential use.

"No changes to the site or appearance of the building are required so the street scene will be unaffected."

Lancaster City Council will make a decision on planning permission in due course.
