Plans revealed for future of ex-Nat West bank in Morecambe

A planning application has gone in for the former Nat West bank in Morecambe.

The plans are to convert the building into two self-contained commercial units.

The bank at 262 Marine Road Central closed in February 2024 and the premises then went up for auction.

An application for planning permission has been sent to Lancaster City Council by Mr Kandasamy of Sivika Associate Ltd, Harrow.

The redundant cash machine on the outside of the building would be removed as part of the plans.

A heritage statement submitted with the plans says: "The proposal includes alterations to the building’s front elevation, specifically the introduction of two new fully glazed entrance doors, replacing existing window openings, and improvements to the ramp for enhanced accessibility.

"The application also involves internal reconfiguration of the ground floor to subdivide the space into two separate units.

"The aim of the proposal is to enhance the building’s visual appearance and functionality while respecting its historic significance.

"The alterations are intended to improve both the streetscape and the commercial accommodation on offer, contributing positively to the regeneration of the central promenade area and supporting the ongoing efforts to enhance its vitality.

"The removal of the ATM machine, which currently detracts from the building’s appearance, and the introduction of new, well-proportioned doors, will help restore a more balanced and historically appropriate façade."

Lancaster City Council will make a decision on granting planning permission, in due course.

The bank closed due to a decline in usage, and was one of a series of Nat West closures across the UK.
