Pedestrian works including homage to Charles Dickens completed outside Lancaster theatre

New bollards outside the Lancaster Grand Theatre

Themed bollards celebrating Charles Dickens and other historical figures are part of the newly-revamped pedestrian area outside a Lancaster theatre.

The works outside the Lancaster Grand and on St Leonard's Gate are now complete, the theatre announced on Monday.

The upgrades include a widened pavement, a new courtesy crossing with tactile flags, and themed bollards celebrating the Grand's history with figures like Joseph Grimaldi and Dickens.

Legendary writer Dickens appeared at the theatre during the 19th century, as did acclaimed actor, dancer and comedian Grimaldi.

The Grand Theatre box office, which temporarily moved during the works, is back open at the front of the theatre.

The work was funded by the Lancaster High Streets Heritage Action Zone project. It was originally due to be carried out in January but had to be rescheduled.

The Lancaster High Streets Heritage Action Zone is a four-year programme funded by Historic England and Lancaster City Council which focuses on investment into buildings, streets and helping people learn more about the Mill Race area’s heritage.

Here are more photos of the bollards and other improvements.
