Morecambe and Lunesdale MP, David Morris, has invited the energy minister to North Lancashire, to visit Heysham’s nuclear power stations.
During the energy security strategy statement last week, Mr Morris made the offer to Secretary of State for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy, Kwasi Kwarteng MP.
‘’Would my right hon. Friend like to come to Heysham and look at the two reactors that are working in my constituency?’’, he said in the House of Commons.
‘’The whole community is behind the nuclear power industry, and it is our future, so I extend that invitation to my right hon. Friend.’’
Kwasi Kwarteng MP said in response: ‘’I should be very happy to go with my hon. Friend to see the nuclear reactors.
‘’The future is decarbonised baseload power. That is what we need, and it is something with which my hon. Friend and I are 100% aligned.’’
Following the statement, David Morris expressed his delight that the minister wished to visit Heysham, especially given the recent news that Heysham nuclear power production could be extended after the site was named in a major new UK government energy strategy.
Up to eight more nuclear reactors could be approved across a number of sites in the coming years, with the government now aiming to deliver the equivalent of one reactor per year, rather than one a decade.
The EDF-owned Heysham site could be chosen to house a new reactor.
Heysham 1 is due to end nuclear energy production and go into a decommissioning phase in 2024, with Heysham 2 following in 2028.
‘’The energy security strategy is brilliant for Morecambe and Lunesdale as it secures the build of a third nuclear power station in Heysham,’’ said Mr Morris.
‘’I am pleased that the Secretary of State has accepted my invitation to come and visit Heysham 1 & 2, so he can see for himself the fantastic nuclear skills that we have in Heysham and our enthusiasm for a new nuclear power station to preserve these skills for generations to come.’’
