A primary school in Lancaster has been recognised for its commitment to promoting a healthy food culture.
Ryelands Primary and Nursery School has received a Food for Life Bronze award for its healthy and climate-friendly food initiatives.
The national Food for Life scheme has been running for more than 20 years changing food for good. With a goal to make good food accessible for all, the organisation work directly with caterers, schools, and communities to implement sustainable and lasting change within their systems.
As part of the Soil Association, they also use their experience to support governments and local authorities to work across the supply chain with farmers and businesses developing practical solutions.
Ryelands is working with Food for Life to transform the school’s food culture and that of its local community, by connecting the children with climate-friendly and healthy food.
As part of the Bronze award scheme, the school, based at Torrisholme Road, serves seasonal school meals, 75% of which are freshly prepared by experienced school cook, Diane Stirzaker.
The school also gives every pupil the opportunity to cook and participate in food growing activities during their time at school, and pupils and parents are involved in making improvements to the school’s menu and dining experience through the school Nutrient Heroes group.
Independent research, summarised in a new report ‘Good food for all’, reveals the success of the Food for Life project.
The evidence from three independent research studies focuses in particular on four main areas of impact: children’s health, tackling inequalities, improving education, and local enterprise and sustainability.
