More than £46,000 has been raised to date by 'prisoners' who were locked up in Lancaster Castle for a very good cause.

A total of 32 people from local businesses and organisations took part in the 'Jail and Bail' for St John's Hospice on Wednesday.

Wearing striped prison gear, they were taken to A-Wing at the castle's former prison and had to contact friends, family and colleagues to raise £999 each for the hospice in order to be released.

During the lunchtime period they were let out into the Castle courtyard for exercise, where they were met by supporters, many with signs calling for them to be set free or in some cases...kept in!

Beyond Radio was there to speak to some of the prisoners and their supporters.

At the end of the day, the online JustGiving page for Jail and Bail showed that £46,875 had been raised in online donations alone, with more to come.

"All prisoners have been successfully rehabilitated and released back into the community," said a St John's Hospice spokesperson.

"Warden Emma and all the team have been blown away by the support of all the prisoners to make this event such a success and raise an amazing amount for St John’s.

"Final total will be published in coming weeks.

"Special thanks to everyone who made this possible including Lancaster Castle, Lancaster Police, Funcast Character Company and Atkinson's Coffee Roasters. And of course all our prisoners.

"Warden Emma is compiling her list of warrants for next year already. Anyone fancy getting locked up just email emma.farmer@sjhospice.org.uk."

St John's Hospice in Lancaster provides palliative care for patients around the North Lancashire and South Lakes area.
