Interview: Meet the couple who are bringing live music back to historic Morecambe venue

Fiona and Alex Wetton at Alhambra Live in Morecambe

Beyond Radio has been chatting to Fiona and Alex Wetton who are bringing regular live music back to one of Morecambe's historic venues.

The married couple run Alhambra Live, formerly The Carleton nightclub, on Marine Road West in the West End of the town.

Alhambra Live has a full programme of live music gigs and entertainment events booked in for the remainder of 2022.

The next big gig at the Alhambra is tomorrow night (Saturday May 28) when local rock band Massive Wagons headline 'Race to the Seaside' at the venue.

For the rest of the year, fortnightly Sunday soul music afternoons, tribute acts, professional wrestling, the Morecambe Rides Again scooter rally and 'Corrosion' goth nights are booked in at Alhambra Live, amongst other gigs and shows.

LISTEN to Fiona and Alex Wetton talking about their plans for Alhambra Live:

"We want to promote live music, we're not a nightclub any more, we want to bring back grass roots music to Morecambe," said Fiona.

Fiona, who is one of the directors at the Alhambra, also works as a teaching assistant at Morecambe Road Primary School and is a local ADC scout leader.

Alex previously worked as a submariner for 20 years, serving on Royal Navy submarines.

The Alhambra first opened in 1901 and was a popular entertainment venue in the town until a devastating fire in 1970.

The building reopened as the Inn on the Bay club later in the 1970s, before being renamed The Carleton.

It temporarily closed in 2012 and 2016 but on both occasions soon reopened.

The Alhambra is owned by local property developer Ian Bond.
