Two old buildings are set to be demolished in the Canal Quarter area of Lancaster.
A single storey brick building next to the old Coach House on St Leonard's Place and a lean-to of the former Carriage Works on Lodge Street will be knocked down.
Lancaster City Council said preparations are about to get under way, ahead of demolition.
The old Coach House will remain.
The main part of the fomer Carriage Works building, and 1 Lodge Street, is currently being restored by the Lancaster Musician’s Co-operative ahead of the music rehearsal, concert and recording space reopening next year.
"The lean-to is in very poor condition, including asbestos contamination, and its removal will allow the main building to be fully restored," said a spokesperson for Lancaster City Council.
"The space created will also allow the city council to develop ideas for future improvements in this area."
The works are being funded with support from the UK Government via the Shared Prosperity Fund and are anticipated to take until December.
They come as Lancaster City Council planning committee this week gave approval to demolish the former Macari's ice cream depot on nearby St Leonardgate (pictured below).
In 2023 a plan to transform the derelict Canal Quarter area of Lancaster into a “vibrant district which is welcoming and inclusive” was backed by the council.
The aim of the masterplan is to bring back into use many of Lancaster’s important buildings and derelict sites across 6.5 hectares of land, to "create a vibrant, sustainable, and active place which is integrated with the city centre and the Lancaster Canal", said the council.
The idea is to create a new sustainable mixed-use neighbourhood with approximately 580 new homes for families and individuals.
The masterplan includes "safe pedestrian and cycle friendly streets" with new pedestrian access to Lancaster Canal.
Space has also been set aside for business, retail, food and beverage outlets to complement what's currently in the city centre.
The masterplan also includes two new public squares to provide "lively social spaces" for events along a new Brewery Street.
The council also wants to build new housing on existing car parks at Nelson Street, St Leonardgate and Edward Street in future, as part of its Canal Quarter development plans.
