24 arrests made in Lancaster area but England Euros final defeat 'not that busy for police'

Twenty four people were arrested in the Lancaster area during the 24-hour period around the European Championship football final.

Detective Inspector Adie Knowles said the arrests were made over Sunday-Monday when people would have been out in pubs either before, during or after watching England lose to Spain.

But Det Insp Knowles (pictured below) also said that overall incidents reported to police in the North Lancashire area over the same time period, were lower than the previous weekend.

"It wasn't as busy (for police) as you'd expect," he said, speaking on 'Beyond the Beat' on Beyond Radio on Tuesday.

"In the main, people were behaving themselves.

"On the previous Sunday into Monday we had 294 incidents recorded (in North Lancashire).

"The Sunday-Monday when the final was on, we had 287. So incident-wise, it was slightly down.

"We arrested 24 people who went through Lancaster custody. The previous Sunday-Monday it was 13.

"You'd expect we'd get a few more arrests because of how many people were around and about for the final. But generally speaking, it didn't cause us much bother at all.

"Generally speaking, it all passed without much incident.

"99.9 per cent of people were in great spirits. OK we lost, but we did well to get to the final."

Det Insp Knowles said the arrests were for "an array of things, a lot of it alcohol-related".

He also said that there were no issues reported to him during the four days that Morecambe Music Festival was taking place in pubs around the town (July 11-14).

"Morecambe Music Festival is a great event for the area, and I'm glad that folk are out and enjoying themselves," he said.
