Listen again: Funding shortage in colleges

Last week saw students, staff and Principals from around the country head to Westminster to raise awareness of the funding shortages for colleges. This action was part of the wider ‘Love Our Colleges’ week which was also a celebration of the hard work staff and volunteers at colleges undertake despite funding shortages.

Recent studies found that funding for colleges has been cut by almost 30% from 2009 to 2019. A decade of almost continuous cuts and constant reforms have led to a significant reduction in the resources available for teaching and support for sixth formers in schools and colleges; potentially restricted course choice; fewer adults in learning; pressures on staff pay and workload

We spoke to Wes Johnson who is the Principal at local college Lancaster & Morecambe College who attended the rally in London, he tells Beyond Radio of the pressures they face to continue to provide quality education despite the apparent lack of funding.
