Road closed outside Lancaster theatre due to burst water main

The scene on St Leonard's Gate in Lancaster this afternoon

The road outside a Lancaster theatre was closed this afternoon after reports of a burst water main.

The incident happened early this afternoon on St Leonard's Gate near the Grand Theatre.

The road was shut to traffic between St Leonard's House and Lodge Street but remained accessible for pedestrians.

A theatre spokesperson said tonight's scheduled live comedy show, featuring stand-up comic Gary Delaney, "will go ahead unless we are advised otherwise".

A spokesperson for United Utilities said: “Our teams are currently on site at St Leonard’s Gate, LA1, following reports of a burst water main.

"The road is still closed from St Leonard's House and Lodge Street and we think it will be until this evening. Lower St Leonardgate car park is open we are not sure if they will close this when work starts.

"We suggest parking in upper St Leonardgate."
