A new cocktail bar and grill has opened for business in Lancaster city centre.

Marula Monkey at 25 Sun Street is run by Travis Dunlop, well-known in the area for his The Mad Hunter restaurants.

Mr Dunlop, who owns the business with his mum Ailsa, studied at the Fusion School of Cookery in Durban, South Africa, and has worked in several fine dining restaurants across both Durban and England.

The new Marula Monkey is located in the home of the former Secret Bistro restaurant, which closed last year.

"Boom, we’re open for business," said a post on the Marula Monkey Facebook page on Thursday.

"Get yourselves down for a coffee, brunch, small plates, street food, steaks, cocktails, wines, rums or even just to say hello and be nosey. We’ve got a cosy courtyard where you can chill and enjoy the ‘warmer’ weather."

The new bar promises "exciting and exotic handcrafted cocktails" and "delicious dishes that will tantalise your tastebuds" inspired by flavours from around the globe.

The bar is named after the Marula, a fruit-bearing tree found in South Africa.

The Mad Hunter, located above the Palatine pub in Morecambe, recently closed as the building has been put up for sale by owners Lancaster Brewery.

It first opened locally on Meeting House Lane in Lancaster before Mr Dunlop moved his restaurant to St Michaels-on-Wyre, before opening above the Palatine in July 2023.
